Lawmaker Proposes Sale of San Quentin Prison

March 22, 2009

San Quentin MapA State Senator in California (Jeff Denham, 12th district) has sponsored a bill proposing that the State sell San Quentin, the state prison sitting on 432 waterfront acres in Marin County.

The prison was built in the mid 19th century, and overtime has come to become surrounded by high end housing and retail.

Various reports i’ve heard have pegged the value of the land at $1B, and some as high as $2B. It’s very unlikely that they will be able to get over a billion for the site today without some sort of entitlements for some pretty good density product in place as there will likely be very strong opposition to any large scale development, and not all of the land will be built on.

In fact, a few years ago Marin County looked at the development of San Quentin and came up with some draft ideas. If this is what the site will remotely resemble, a large portion of the site will be open space.

So what do you think? Should the state sell the site or ground lease it to developers?

I say sell the thing as well, but I don’t think right now is the right time to do it. I also think that there will be severe opposition from any large scale development in Marin County, though anything will be better than a prison.

We’ll see – like most things in our government, , I doubt this will go anywhere.

Sounds like a great idea. You can re-locate all of the inmates to Fulton Street. Or better yet put them in charge of collecting all of the black cars in California. I pray each day that the big Quake dumps the State of California in the ocean. California is after all the A** pimple of the USA!
