Oakland A’s Drop Fremont
February 25, 2009
According to the Mercury News, the Oakland A’s have notified the City of Fremont that they are no longer considering the city as a site for a new ballpark. The team had originally looked at the Pacific Commons area of the city, and then after running into opposition began considering a site closer to Warm Springs and the NUMMI plant. But after facing stiff opposition from retailers, residents, and employers, the team has apparently dropped its plans for Fremont.
As part of efforts to move to Fremont, Lew Wolff, the owner of the A’s had acquired some real estate, including the Fountain Business Park off of Auto Mall Parkway and Albrae in Fremont. It will be interesting to see what the team’s next move will be, but proximity to mass transit will be an absolute must, making the vicinity of the Diridon Station in San Jose a viable option as the planned BART extension would ultimately intersect with CalTrain, and in the future possibly the high speed rail which is on the drawing board.
